How to Choose the Right Manga Out of Literally Thousands of Options

Action, comedy, fantasy, horror, slice of life, sports...there are A LOT of manga options out there.

Sure, variety is the spice of life. But where should you start?

We've got your back.

In this blog, we'll break down a few popular manga genres and then discuss how you can find your perfect match by learning your manga style.

How many different types of manga are there?

In a word—lots. Like most of the best things in life, manga genres are fluid and constantly evolving. Trust us. Even if you think you're not into manga, you can find something you'll fall in love with. There is literally something for everyone.

Some of the most popular manga genres and subgenres include:

  • Action & Adventure/Battle. Larger-than-life characters with super-human strength battle it out in high-stakes battles. These mangas often revolve around the timeless struggle between good vs. evil.

  • Comedy. A comedy manga only has to be one thing—funny. Comedy manga tends to put ordinary characters in outrageous situations. Or, they might put outrageous characters into ordinary situations. Comedy crosses over with other genres, such as Action, Romance, or Slice of Life.

  • Romance. Romance focuses on relationships and love. Romance can cross paths with every genre, from Action to Comedy to Slice of Life.

  • Fantasy/Magic. Stories in alternate universes or timelines full of magic, sorcery, or supernatural beings.

  • Historical Fiction. Historical fictions take actual historical events and flip them upside down. They frequently cross over with other genres, such as Action or Fantasy.

  • Horror. Horror manga vividly brings monsters and nightmares to life. It can tell supernatural tales or eerily mirror real life.

  • LGBTQ+. LGBTQ+ manga follows queer protagonists as they navigate daily life. They may or may not involve romantic relationships.

  • Science Fiction. Science fiction manga includes everything from mecha (robots) to journeys through outer space.

  • Slice of Life. Slice of life focuses on relatively ordinary people leading ordinary lives, with the occasional silly shenanigan sprinkled in. Expect to laugh and relax.

  • Sports. Sports manga revolve around athletes chasing dreams of greatness. Come for the fierce rivalries. Stay for the heart-warming friendship.
